About Course

  • This course introduces students to fundamentals of university level reading and writing.
  • Topics based on current affairs, publications and contemporary novels will be read using active reading and discussions. Students will develop skills to research, organize and reorganize their thoughts in preparation to write a short blog, essays and research projects.
  • This course also builds skills to hear/give constructive feedback, reflect on such feedback, edit (or not) their work for oral and written presentations.

What Will You Learn?

  • ● Perform college/university level critical analysis of an article, story or text by evaluating and debating the author’s ideas, rhetorical patterns, tone, context, style and evidence.
  • ● Utilize actively reading techniques of annotating, elaborating, reflecting and questioning an article, story or text.
  • ● Assess the relevance, adequacy, and credibility of information, arguments, and evidence used to reach conclusions in oral and written texts.
  • ● Determine which writing convention is expected depending on discipline, audience or task, including organizing, content, presentation, format, citation and style.
  • ● Complete all steps in the academic writing process: researching, drafting, revising, editing and proofreading.
  • ● Analyze, synthesize, interpret, and evaluate source material.
  • ● Summarize, paraphrase and quote written and oral sources.
  • ● Apply MLA and APA-style documentation and formatting to a document.
  • ● Write fluently and grammatically in a range of academic forms.
