About Course

  • This course introduces students to the Canadian business legal environment and forms an appreciation for decision making based on common law, provincial and federal statutes based on examples of precedent.
  • Topics will include an overview of the legal system, torts, contracts, forms of business, agency, sale of goods, consumer protection, real estate, intellectual property and employment.
  • Environmental, privacy and other current business laws will be explored as part of this course.

What Will You Learn?

  • After completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
  • ● Describe the basic origins of Canadian common law, equity, and statute law.
  • ● Explain the BC and Canadian court system and structure.
  • ● Explain the differences between intentional and unintentional torts and the legal
  • remedies available to successful plaintiffs.
  • ● Describe the elements of a contract with emphasis on contract validity and
  • enforceability.
  • ● Understand how a contract can be discharged and the possible remedies of breach
  • of contract.
  • ● Explain the different forms of business and understand the benefits and
  • disadvantages of proprietorship, general partnerships, corporations, use of LTD and
  • INC, and requirements for other provincial registrations.
  • ● Apply rules from sale of goods legislation to determine when title to goods passes to
  • a buyer.
  • ● Identify seller activities designed to drive up prices of goods or services, cause price
  • discrimination or unduly lessen competition.
  • ● Explain how mortgages, conditional sale agreements and other security instruments
  • protect creditor investments and creditors' rights upon default.
  • ● Explain patents, trademarks, copyright and industrial design and general registration
  • procedures.
  • ● Specify types of remedies available to a plaintiff under environmental common law
  • cases and why legislation is required to address pollution causing more fundamental
  • environmental damage.
  • ● Describe the effect of contract law on the employer-employee relationship.
